Our best tips for kitchen islands in 2022
ARTICLES & INSIGHTS
Kitchen islands are one of the most popular features in our kitchen designs. Islands, also known as peninsulas are extremely useful as they provide a great preparation space, eating areas, and endless storage possibilities.
When used for dining
You need to think about whether you want your kitchen island to double as a casual eating area for yourself or your family. In many of the open-plan kitchens we design, there’s already a formal dining space with a table that can seat 8 or 10 people. So the island would be better suited for more informal meals. A kitchen unit is usually about 90cm high, whereas a dining table hovers around 75cm. This is why people often have bar stools at their breakfast bars; the countertops are higher than those of a typical dining table.
We have designed some beautiful kitchen spaces, with a dining table placed off to the side of the island where there is also enough room for chairs. This set-up is usually only possible in larger kitchens since it can be more difficult to plan something like this in a smaller space.
Preparing food
When it comes to kitchen island ideas, you must consider whether or not this location will be used for food preparation. The placement of components in this case must be meticulous. If most of your food preparation will take place on the island, for example, there’s no sense in having the bin over there somewhere away from where most of your chopping takes place.
When you’re thinking about food preparation, you should also think about whether you want your sink on the island. Some people find it easier to prep food that way, but others don’t like how messy it can make the kitchen look. This is usually a question of what style of kitchen you have. More traditional kitchens typically have sinks and taps on the island, while more modern kitchens often just have the stovetop on the island.
Some great alternatives
If you have a limited amount of space in your kitchen, don’t worry! You could still install a peninsula or breakfast bar. Even such a small change could make a significant difference to your life.
Be bold with colour
This is a personal choice – an island may look fantastic in what is otherwise a white kitchen – although many of our customers choose to add some colour to the island as a sort of separate piece of furniture. Regardless, be sure you use top-of-the-line materials to ensure your cabinets endure years.
If you can’t make a decision yet, don’t worry! We will consider all options when discussing a kitchen island or peninsula and planning your new kitchen design. If you’re thinking about getting a new kitchen and want more information or design advice, feel free to contact us London Kitchen Designer either through our website or give us call at 0208 504 8850.
